ABOUT HMM
HELSEHJELP UKRAINA

Ukraine are currently suffering from inhumane conditions as a result of the ongoing war. Just 2 years ago, these same individuals lived peaceful lives similar to ours, surrounded by a well-functioning community infrastructure and taking basic necessities such as healthcare, food, and warmth for granted.

Due to Russia's military aggression, the situation has drastically changed. Bombings, death, and destruction are now commonplace, and civilians are suffering as a result. Emergency services, hospitals, and medical units in the Ukrainian defense lack important and life-saving equipment. It's because of this that Tor Fredrik Müller and Paal Christian Mowinckel wanted to find a way to help, and so HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina was formed.

Müller and Mowinckel reached out to Haukeland University Hospital (HUS) to explore opportunities for supporting medical equipment. Additionally, the business community in Bergen, various foundations, the public sector, and many individuals all rallied to provide support to HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina.

Following a overwhelming response, the emergency aid initiative HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina became a reality, and vital aid and equipment has been (and is continuing to be) sent to Ukraine. The war is ongoing, and the suffering among both civilians and military personnel is increasing. Reports indicate that a need for such things as basic sanitary products, first aid equipment, medical equipment to treat the injured, clothing for the soldiers, and combat rations is only increasing. The need for help is greater now than ever, and it is urgent.

Support our work

We are very grateful for all the support that we receive. As part of our ongoing fundraising campaigns, we accept both financial contributions and donations of equipment.

We also want to make contact with associations and organizations that would like to channel health aid to Ukraine through HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina.

One important reason why Ukrainians are able to keep their spirits up is due to the support of the international community. HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina, together with their supporters, will actively contribute as long as Ukraine needs help.

HOW WE DO IT

Our goal is to procure essential and life-saving equipment for Ukraine without costly intermediaries. The aid we procure then gets sent directly to the front lines in Ukraine.

We achieve this through:

  • Activities which raise money for medical equipment, clothing, vehicles, food, and other necessary supplies.
  • Zero costs for administration, marketing, or legal assistance.
  • A free storage hub in Bergen for logistics and preparation of equipment that is collected and sent to Ukraine.
  • Financial support for transport.
  • Establishing contact and partnerships with other relevant players in Norway to ensure that regular shipments of aid equipment are sent to the front lines in Ukraine.

HMM does not involve itself in weapons or weapon-related aid.

WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR

  • As of today, HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina has facilitated the collection and shipment of vehicles and life-saving equipment of the value of nearly 100 million Norwegian kroner to Ukraine.
  • Nearly 30 vans and trailers have been sent from Bergen to Ukraine, fully loaded with life-saving equipment, clothing, combat rations, and generators. Much of the equipment are donations from various departments at Haukeland University Hospital and from other healthcare providers in Western Norway. The rest was purchased with funds raised through the project. Additionally, a significant amount of first aid equipment has been bought for soldiers at the front line, including individual kits with tourniquets, as well as basic health products like bandages, compresses, syringes, and emergency lung rescue kits, along with combat rations.
  • We have purchased winter clothing for the medical units of the Ukrainian defense and collected various goods, such as combat rations, dry goods, hygiene products, and wool clothing, among others, from a number of contributors.
  • We have a dedicated project aimed solely at children suffering due to the war in Ukraine. Among other contributions, we have received a significant and important donation from the Anna Jebsens Minde Foundation.
  • The fundraising campaign "Walk for Ukraine" in 2022, where Müller and Mowinckel walked 100,000 steps in one day and challenged contributors to donate 1 krone per step, resulted in 1.5 million kroner.
  • In the summer of 2022, we provided two refrigerated trucks and four Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs/four-wheel drives, which were filled with medical equipment. These vehicles are used as support vehicles for the medical units of the Ukrainian defense. The refrigerated trucks are used for the home transport of fallen soldiers and for transporting medical equipment to the frontline. As the infrastructure has deteriorated in many areas, the need for four-wheel drives has become significant.
  • In December 2022, funds were raised for 100 power generators (3-3.5 kW), and we received donations of four generators (50-200 kW) that will serve as emergency power systems for hospitals, water treatment facilities, and an orphanage. All of these items were delivered to Ukraine in January 2023.
  • In March and April 2023, we delivered three additional vehicles to Ukraine. Initially, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota Hilux, equipped with a 110 kVA mobile generator on a trailer. The vehicles were fully loaded with life-saving first aid equipment for the medical units of the Ukrainian defense, who work around the clock to save injured soldiers fighting for their country. Subsequently, another Toyota Hilux was deployed to the front to quickly transport wounded soldiers to medical treatment.
  • In April 2023, we transported a fire truck donated by Ullensvang Municipality to Ukraine. The vehicle was part of a convoy of donated fire and ambulance vehicles that was driven to Ukraine under the auspices of the Norwegian-Ukrainian Fire and Ambulance Support (NUBAS). The truck is proving to be extremely useful in Ukraine, where there is a significant need for emergency vehicles.
  • We have also contributed a compact mobile operating room. This is a converted ambulance equipped with essential equipment and an operating table, designed to perform urgent life-saving surgeries near the front line.
  • Through a crowdfunding campaign in collaboration with Bergen Business Council, 5.2 million Norwegian kroner were raised from businesses and individuals in the Bergen area for a new, mobile operating room for the Ukrainian medical service. This is a large, all-terrain truck weighing over 40 tons, featuring a hydraulic extendable side, and equipped with advanced medical surgical equipment and two operating tables. It is the only one of its kind in Ukraine so far, and with a capacity to treat up to 100 patients daily, it will make a significant difference in saving the lives of critically injured Ukrainian soldiers before they can be transported to hospitals. The mobile operating room was delivered to Ukraine at the end of April 2023 and is now fully operational.
  • In meetings with Ukrainian medical leaders at the end of April 2023, where the need for additional equipment and materials was discussed, HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina was made aware that beyond war injuries from grenades, gunfire, and explosions, dental health is now one of the biggest issues among Ukrainian soldiers. Long periods in trenches without proper dental hygiene lead to severe pain due to inflammations in the oral cavity and toothache. These inflammations impair the soldiers' abilities and make it harder to heal wounds and gunshot injuries. In light of this, HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina was asked if we could contribute a mobile dental clinic. We promised on the spot that we would do our utmost to acquire a large all-terrain truck with four-wheel drive, fitted as a complete dental clinic stocked with equipment. The clinic was completed and delivered in September, ready for action at the front line.
  • On Sunday, May 7, 2023, Tor Fredrik Müller and Paal Christian Mowinckel embarked on their second fundraising walk. This time, the goal was to raise money for the mobile dental clinic mentioned above. Businesses and individuals were encouraged to contribute between 1 and 5 kroner for each of the 100,000 steps they walked. The pedometer tipped over 100,000 steps (just over 80 kilometers), securing approximately 2 million Norwegian kroner for the mobile dental clinic.
  • Bergen Municipality, besides being an excellent ambassador, also contributes with equipment, including large quantities of hygiene equipment and one of the generators that was sent to Ukraine in early 2023. The municipality also contributed 650,000 kroner towards the construction of the mobile dental clinic.
  • Employees of Vestland County Council are also involved and engaged. They voted to select HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina as one of two organizations to receive 25,000 kroner each as a Christmas gift from the county council in 2022.
  • At the end of July 2023, the last two of three vehicles, donated by Seatrans AS, were delivered to the medical units of the Ukrainian defense and are now operational in the field. These vehicles are used to transport wounded soldiers to the mobile operating room donated by HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina.
  • During the summer of 2023, a large number of Jerven thermal wraps were delivered to Ukraine, donated by Jerven AS and the municipalities of Ullensvang and Suldal. These wraps keep Ukrainian service personnel and wounded soldiers dry and warm in cold and challenging conditions.
  • An ambulance donated to HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina by Helse Bergen HF was delivered to Ukraine in July 2023, in collaboration with the Norwegian-Ukrainian Fire and Ambulance Support.
  • Through a partnership with the law firm BAHR, HMM Health Help Ukraine has received financial support and ongoing access to pro bono legal and communications expertise.
  • The first weekend in December 2023, a large aid convoy from HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina set out from Bergen headed for the Polish-Ukrainian border. This was our 38th and so far largest aid shipment to Ukraine. In total, the convoy's value exceeded 30 million Norwegian kroner.
    • 11 newer 4x4 vehicles: Ford Rangers, Toyota Hiluxes, VW Amaroks, and Mitsubishi Pajeros, used for transporting wounded soldiers from the front lines to mobile operating rooms donated by HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina.
    • 1 new caravan with sleeping accommodation for 6 doctors/nurses at our mobile operating rooms.
    • 1 Gladiator vehicle with sleeping accommodations for 4 doctors/nurses at our mobile operating rooms.
    • 1200 Jervenduk thermal wraps to keep soldiers dry, warm, and camouflaged in the trenches.
    • 1100 tourniquets to allow soldiers to stop bleeding from gunshot and mine injuries.
    • 3 pallets of bandages/individual first aid kits.
    • 14 laptops for medical units.
    • Other medical equipment.
  • The last weekend of January 2024, another semi-trailer fully loaded with health aid and equipment was dispatched to the Ukrainian medical service. This shipment included:
    • Two evacuation vehicles intended for transporting wounded soldiers from the front lines.
    • 400 Jervenduk thermal wraps.
    • Medication.
    • Prosthetics.
    • Various other medical supplies.
  • Poor dental health leads to life-threatening infections in injured Ukrainian soldiers. Inflammation complicates the healing of wounds and gunshot injuries. In response, HMM Health Aid Ukraine has developed a concept for a fully equipped mobile dental clinic mounted on a MAN truck chassis. Thanks to a very generous donation from Sparebanken Vest, HMM Health Aid Ukraine delivered another mobile dental clinic to Ukrainian medical services in early March 2024. It was immediately put into operation to save lives in the field. HMM Health Aid Ukraine has sent several convoys from Bergen with life-saving and essential medical materials and first aid equipment to Ukraine. All deliveries are based on the needs of the Ukrainian medical services. In mid-March 2024, equipment worth several million kroner was delivered:
    • First aid supplies for emergency treatment at the front
    • Medical stretchers
    • Transport incubator for premature infants
    • Complete dental clinic
    • Emergency boat
    • Heating blankets
    • Combat rations
    • Fire extinguishing equipment. At the same time, a mobile blood transfusion clinic, specially designed according to HMM's specifications, was also delivered.
